In the wake of Hurricane Melissa’s devastation in November 2025, the Jamaica Defence Force Co-operative Credit Union (JDFCCU) has stepped forward as a pillar of support for its members and the wider Jamaican community. With a combination of financial relief measures and hands-on humanitarian assistance, the JDFCCU is ensuring that those affected can begin rebuilding their lives with dignity and urgency.
JDFCCU Relief Initiatives
Understanding the financial strain placed on families after the disaster, the JDF Credit Union activated several targeted relief programmes designed to offer immediate and meaningful support.
1. Loan Repayment Moratoriums
To provide financial breathing room, the JDFCCU—along with several local financial institutions—is offering payment holidays on existing loans. This moratorium gives affected members temporary relief from monthly obligations, allowing them to focus on recovery efforts without the added pressure of loan repayments.
2. Special Easi Loans Up to $1 Million
Members in need of emergency financial assistance can now access Easi Loans of up to JMD $1 million. These loans come with favourable, low-interest terms and are intended to help cover urgent expenses such as:
- Structural home repairs
- Replacement of damaged belongings
- Restoration of essential equipment or personal items
This initiative ensures that members can rebuild quickly and safely without excessive financial burden.
3. Relief Supply Drives
Staying true to the credit union philosophy of “People Helping People,” the JDFCCU joined forces with the Jamaica Co-operative Credit Union League (JCCUL) to distribute food, hygiene products, and other essential supplies. These efforts form part of the national credit union movement’s coordinated hurricane relief response.
Wider JDF Humanitarian Efforts
The JDFCCU’s initiatives operate alongside the Jamaica Defence Force’s extensive humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations across the island.
Following Hurricane Melissa, the JDF:
- Established 22 disaster relief outposts across St. Elizabeth, Westmoreland, and Trelawny
- Conducted over 200 combined air and ground missions
- Delivered thousands of care packages and hot meals to affected communities
- Worked closely with ODPEM, government ministries, and international partners to coordinate recovery and relief logistics
These combined efforts highlight the JDF’s ongoing commitment to national resilience and community well-being.
